Our Story

YOUTH WITH A MISSION PITTSBURGH WAS BROUGHT TO LIFE by Doug and Debi Tunney in 2001.  They dreamt of an opportunity for the church of Pittsburgh to be mobilized onto the mission field.  Their vision was to create an environment where people from around the world are trained and released as strong leaders who transform nations.  We want to bring back passion for evangelism into YWAM and see this basic value expressed through the powerful lives of young people.  We offer many courses and programs to see this vision fulfilled. The three main ones are the Discipleship Training SchoolJoshua Generation and Ministry Bridge School

Since 2001, YWAM Pittsburgh has developed into a movement of missionaries wanting to take God’s heart and apply it to their lives on every level.  So what is the heart of God?  To bring others into relationship with Him, to bring restoration to broken lives and to make committed disciples of all who make the decision to live for God.

At YWAM Pittsburgh, we are fighting to break the culture of comfort and safety from Christian life.  Our goal is to do whatever it takes, go wherever the Gospel is unheard and try the untried to bring people to the Lord.  We believe that our lives belong to God and so to do whatever He asks, no matter the cost, is the highest calling we can have.  After all, our God is all-powerful and makes the impossible happen every day.

As a base, we have been to 32 countries, including Mozambique, Turkey, Mongolia, Liberia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Scotland.  In the places we have been, we have seen more than 111,280 people make decisions for Christ, 95 healings and have ministered to almost half a million people.

John Matarazzo, who has been a part of our staff for 7 years, has done everything from maintenance to leading worship to leading Discipleship Training Schools.  He says that what he loves about YWAM Pittsburgh is “taking young lives and giving them a glimpse of what God can do through them.  Giving them a hope and a future for what they can do for Jesus.”  This is what happened in his life through YWAM and he wants to help make that happen in others’ lives.
